Which airports does a private jet to Nashville use?

An empty leg is a private jet flying without passengers, usually to reach its next booking or get home. Because the operator is flying anyway, the aircraft is offered for up to 75% less than chartering it in the usual way. If you are pricing a private jet to Nashville for CMA Fest, a big birthday weekend or a day of meetings in Brentwood, the board above shows every live leg touching Nashville International and John C. Tune, priced for the whole aircraft.

Mostly two airports. Nashville International (BNA) is the big one, about 8 miles east of downtown, with four runways, customs and two large private terminals. John C. Tune (JWN), on the city’s west side, is the smaller business-aviation field. Smyrna (MQY), south-east of the city, is the main overflow airport, and Murfreesboro is a small field for turboprops.

A private terminal, called an FBO (fixed-base operator) in the trade, is the building where private passengers check in, meet their car and board, well away from the airline terminal. Our guide to what an FBO is covers the detail. BNA and John C. Tune are both owned by the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority.

AirportFBOsLongest runwayWhere it isCustoms
Nashville International (BNA / KBNA) Atlantic Aviation, Signature 11,030 ft (four runways) about 8 miles east of downtown Yes, 3pm to 9pm daily; landing rights 2 hours ahead

✈Airport by airport

What each Nashville airport is like.

Nashville International (BNA)

BNA’s longest runway is 11,030 ft, long enough for any business jet, and there are three more of 7,704 to 8,001 ft. Private flights use one of two FBOs on Hangar Lane: Atlantic Aviation, whose newer terminal has a separate VIP lounge with direct aircraft access, and Signature, whose terminal is decked out with music memorabilia and has a dedicated area for sports charters. The control tower is open 24 hours, which is why many operators prefer BNA after dark.

John C. Tune (JWN)

One runway, 6,001 ft by 100 ft, with an arresting bed at the end of runway 20. That suits light and midsize jets; for a super-midsize the operator checks the specific aircraft, and larger cabins usually go to BNA. The single FBO, Contour Flight Support, is open 24 hours, but the tower runs only from 7am to 9pm. There is no customs, so flights here are domestic. It is a quieter, quicker option for the West End, Belle Meade and Green Hills.

Smyrna (MQY) and Murfreesboro (MBT)

Smyrna is a former air force base south-east of the city, with an 8,038 ft runway, two FBOs, Azure Flight Support and Hollingshead Aviation, and no customs. It is the field operators turn to when BNA ramps fill up. Murfreesboro, further south-east, has a 4,750 ft runway: fine for turboprops, tight for most jets.

Is John C. Tune or Nashville International better?

With an empty leg the route is fixed, so you take whichever airport the operator has listed. When you are choosing between two legs, or pricing a full charter, a few rules of thumb help.

  • Light or midsize jet to the West End or Belle Meade: John C. Tune is usually quicker on the ground.
  • Heavy jets, or a landing after 9pm: BNA, because John C. Tune’s tower has closed by then.
  • Downtown and Lower Broadway: BNA is about 8 miles out. Allow at least 20 minutes by car, and an hour or more at rush hour (Frommer’s). For other transfer times, ask your operator or FBO.
  • Big-event weekends: ask the operator to book FBO parking at BNA when you book the flight, or plan on Smyrna.

Your FBO can arrange a car to meet the aircraft, so the transfer starts on the ramp.

How much does a private jet from Nashville cost?

Empty legs are priced for the whole aircraft, not per seat. Share it with the people you are flying with and the cost per person falls with every seat you fill. The listed price is set by the operator and moves as the departure date gets closer, and every price on the board follows the currency picker, so you can compare in dollars, pounds or euros.

A full charter is priced by the hour, and the class of jet sets the rate. It also pays for the aircraft to reach you, and often to fly home empty, which is exactly the leg an empty-leg buyer gets cheaply. For the hourly rates by aircraft class, see cheap private jet hire prices and our guide to private jet charter cost. The table shows indicative rates before fees and taxes.

If there is no leg on your dates, the “Didn’t find your leg?” tool below prices a full charter on your route in seconds, so you can compare the two.

◷Timing

When is Nashville busiest for private jets?

June and November, plus most weekends. CMA Fest runs from 10 to 13 June (CMA Fest) and the CMA Awards are on 18 November at Bridgestone Arena (CMA Awards). Both bring aircraft in from across the country.

Between those two weeks come the group trips: hen weekends, milestone birthdays, a few nights of live music on Broadway. A group of six to eight fills a midsize jet and splits the cost. Tennessee Titans home games add football traffic from September into early January.

For empty-leg hunters, busy weeks cut both ways. Charter prices rise and parking tightens. But a jet that drops a group and cannot stay on the ramp may leave empty and come back empty to collect them, and those are the legs to catch. For how event weeks move prices, see private jet prices in event weeks.

Most legs are listed days rather than weeks before departure, and once someone enquires, a leg is usually decided within a day or two, sometimes the same day. So the people who get them are usually the ones with an alert set. Set a route alert a few weeks before CMA Fest and you are watching for exactly those flights. Our guide on how to find empty legs explains why an alert beats checking the board each morning.

Customs on a private jet into Nashville

Yes, but only at BNA, and not around the clock. US Customs and Border Protection clears private arrivals there between 3pm and 9pm, seven days a week, according to its Nashville general-aviation fact sheet, and the request for landing rights has to go in at least 2 hours before you leave the foreign airport. Clearance can be slower while airline flights from abroad are arriving. John C. Tune, Smyrna and Murfreesboro have no customs. Your operator books the customs slot, and a morning arrival from abroad has to clear somewhere else first.
