The Kentucky Derby is run at Churchill Downs in Louisville on Saturday 1 May, with the Kentucky Oaks the day before. It is one of the busiest business-aviation weekends in the US: in one past Derby week, the three Louisville-area airports handled more than a thousand flights, and the main airport closed a taxiway to park jets. The FAA publishes special procedures every year. Below: which field to use, how parking works, the short run to the track, and what it costs. Race dates are confirmed each season by the official Kentucky Derby site.

Where most legs originate

Derby demand comes from across the eastern half of the US: the New York area, Chicago, Florida and Texas, plus a regional crowd on short hops.

Which airport is closest to Churchill Downs?

Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF) is the closest airport to Churchill Downs, about two nautical miles away, and it takes every size of jet. General aviation parking there is handled by Atlantic Aviation. Bowman Field (LOU), the city’s historic general aviation airport about five miles from downtown, is the quieter alternative for light jets and turboprops. Clark Regional (JVY), across the Ohio River in Indiana, is the overflow field the FAA staffs with a temporary tower in Derby week.

  • KLOUBowman Field — light jets and turboprops only (30,000 lb limit). Smaller, calmer and close to the east-side hotels.

Procedures · what the FAA publishes

What are the FAA’s Kentucky Derby procedures?

The FAA publishes a domestic notice for the Derby each year. The most recent one covered Louisville SDF, Bowman Field and Clark Regional, and warned of heavy demand and possible traffic management initiatives for IFR arrivals across Derby week, with the longest windows on Derby day itself. It did not set up an airport slot reservation; instead, expect flow control, metering and possible delays if you arrive in the peak.

PARKING The real limit

  • SDF PARKINGGeneral aviation parking is handled by Atlantic Aviation, with long-term parking on a taxiway and other areas as needed. Pilots call the FBO on 129.9 thirty minutes before arrival.
  • PAST DERBY WEEKGlobalAir reported more than 200 aircraft parked on two miles of closed taxiway at SDF.
  • RESERVE EARLYReserve parking with the FBO when you book the jet, and expect ramp or event fees. Our guide to hidden fees covers what to ask.

AIRSPACE What the notice also says

  • OVERFLIGHTSAircraft not landing in the Louisville area are asked to avoid overflying below 14,000 feet within 50 miles of SDF.
  • EXTRA TRAFFICThe notice flags helicopter, banner-tow and blimp activity around Churchill Downs.
  • FILE EARLYNone of this affects passengers directly, but it is why a professional crew files early.

Plan it like this

File early, park confirmed, arrive Friday

Fly in on Thursday or for Oaks day on Friday, before Derby-day flow control peaks. Land at SDF with confirmed Atlantic Aviation parking, or Bowman Field if you are in a light jet. On Derby day, leave for the track early. Plan your departure for Sunday morning rather than straight after the race, when every jet wants to leave at once.

What it costs

Empty leg vs full charter for Derby weekend

Derby weekend prices like any US peak event, typically 15–30% above a normal week; see why private jet prices rise in event weeks. The live figure for your route is confirmed on enquiry, so use the estimate below rather than a rule of thumb.

Sanity-check any "deal" against the benchmark:   Light jet US$3,500–5,000/hr · super-mid US$6,000–9,000/hr · heavy US$8,000–14,000/hr.
Add the transfer:   A short chauffeur from SDF; Bowman Field is across town.

Helicopter options

Can you take a helicopter to Churchill Downs?

Short answer

Possibly, but don’t plan the trip around it

Churchill Downs has a heliport, but it is listed as private use, so any landing is by arrangement with the track and the helicopter operator, and the FAA expects plenty of other helicopter traffic around the course on Derby day. With SDF only a couple of miles from the track, a chauffeur is usually the simpler answer. Our helicopter vs private jet guide explains where a helicopter earns its cost.

Questions · Kentucky Derby specifics

Good to know before you book

Which airport is closest to Churchill Downs?
Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF), about two nautical miles from the track. It takes every size of jet, and Atlantic Aviation handles general aviation parking. Bowman Field is the smaller alternative for light jets.
Can I fly a private jet into Bowman Field?
Yes, if it’s a light jet or turboprop. Bowman Field has a 30,000 lb weight limit and a main runway of 4,356 feet end to end, so super-midsize and heavy jets use SDF instead. Your operator confirms against the aircraft.
Does the FAA run a slot reservation for the Derby?
Not in the most recent notice. The FAA warns of heavy demand and possible traffic management initiatives such as delays and metering, and says air-filed flight plans may not be accepted. Parking is arranged with the FBO.
Where do jets park on Derby weekend?
At SDF, Atlantic Aviation directs parking, including long-term spots on a closed taxiway. Pilots call the FBO thirty minutes before arrival. When Louisville fills, Clark Regional in Indiana is the overflow.
When should I leave after the Derby?
Sunday morning if you can. Departures cluster straight after the race on Saturday evening, and flow control can mean delays. A Sunday departure is calmer and sometimes cheaper if you can pair it with a repositioning leg.
Is a helicopter to Churchill Downs worth it?
Usually not. SDF is only a couple of miles from the track, and the heliport at Churchill Downs is private use, so landings are by arrangement. A chauffeur from SDF is simpler.
Does the Derby clash with other big events?
Possibly. Early May is busy for US events, and aircraft in the eastern US can be in demand across the same days. Book early, or set an alert for empty legs heading home after the weekend.
